Wu Xing: how the five elements generate and control each other
Updated October 2026 · By Golden Lai
TL;DR
The generating cycle runs wood to fire to earth to metal to water and back to wood. The controlling cycle runs wood over earth, earth over water, water over fire, fire over metal and metal over wood. Wu Xing describes balance, not good and bad: a missing element does not automatically need adding, and a dominant one may need draining or controlling.

The generating cycle
Wood feeds fire as fuel burns. Fire makes earth as ash settles. Earth bears metal as ore sits in the ground. Metal carries water as dew forms on metal. Water feeds wood by irrigating plants. That is the outer cycle.
The controlling cycle
Wood breaks earth as roots split soil. Earth holds water as a bank holds a river. Water puts fire out. Fire melts metal. Metal cuts wood. That is the inner star.
When there is too much
Too much of the parent can overwhelm the child, as too much water floats the wood away. Too much of what is controlled can push back on the controller. So filling whatever is missing is not a formula. A favourable element depends on the Day Master's strength, the month and the combinations.
Wu Xing in a Ba Zi chart
The day master element is the stem of the birth day. Counts use stems, branches and hidden stems. The month branch usually weighs most. The element calculator shows the balance. The how to read page walks a full chart.
Wu Xing in feng shui
Directions and trigrams have elements too. A colour or an object is matched to the space and the people, not copied from a chart into every room. The service area page says where a visit is part of the practice.
Wu Xing in a tropical climate
Malaysia, Singapore and most of South East Asia do not have four temperate seasons. Ba Zi uses solar terms, not whether the day feels hot. The seasonal column is symbolic here, not a weather report.

The organ column is a traditional correspondence. It does not replace medical advice.

Questions
If I am missing an element, should I add it?
Not necessarily. It depends on the Day Master's strength and the whole chart. Sometimes the missing element is not the one to strengthen.
How do I know my element?
Usually it means your Day Master, the heavenly stem of your birth day. Use the element calculator on this site.
Is my element the same as my zodiac animal?
Related, not the same. Your animal is the year branch, which has an element, but it is one of eight characters.
Can Wu Xing tell me about my health?
Traditionally the elements map to organs. That can inform habits. It never replaces a doctor.
